CFC Polyurethane Flooring Info

May 5, 2021

Dear Millville Public Schools community,

Polyurethane floors containing mercury have been a well-documented topic amongst New Jersey school districts over the last year. Based on this discussion, the New Jersey Schools Development Authority (NJSDA)* opted to sample the Child Family Center (CFC) and Lakeside Middle School (LMS). On April 30th the NJSDA sent a letter of memorandum to Millville Public Schools (MPS) school superintendent, Tony Trongone.

In the memorandum it was discovered that Lakeside Middle School does NOT have polyurethane floors. The CFC does have four rooms that do have polyurethane floors.  The four rooms (which are not classrooms but motor skills rooms) tested positive for mercury. Two of the rooms exhibited mercury above the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) guidance maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 0.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of room air.

The following actions have been taken to date:

  • The four affected motor skills rooms are closed to students and staff for the remainder of the school year.
  • A meeting with CFC staff took place on Tuesday, May 4 explaining the current condition.
  • A letter from CFC Principal, Joann Burns, went out to CFC parents.
  • The memorandum and testing report from NJSDA will be posted on the Millville Public Schools Facilities website
  • Our Human Resources Department will be providing access for those who wish to be tested for exposure, and
  • MPS facilities department will inspect all other schools in the district.

Moving forward with actions that will take place in the immediate future:

  • We are moving summer programs (PK-ESY, Summer Enrichment & Wrap Around) for CFC STUDENTS ONLY to Holly Heights Elementary School.
  • NJSDA will remediate the affected gross motor rooms over the summer and they have informed  us that the project will be completed before the start of the 21-22 school year.

The burden of cost of this remediation will be placed on the NJSDA, not local taxpayers.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Superintendent’s Office at 856-327-6001.
